Pathology

Tumors and cysts of the mouth, jaws and surrounding structures of the face may possibly cause pain, numbness, swelling, asymmetries, shifting of teeth, malocclusion and other concerning health repercussions. We can help manage or provide definitive treatment for many conditions affecting the oral and maxillofacial region.
When a lesion is concerning, a biopsy will likely be recommended. A biopsy is the removal of a small portion of tissue from your soft issues, teeth, or jaw. Generally, a biopsy is performed to obtain a histologic diagnosis (under microscope by a trained pathologist).

Because certain oral diseases result in lumps and cysts inside of the mouth, it is important to examine any that appear to ensure your oral and general health. Based on the diagnosis, further treatment may or may not be necessary for which we will follow and advise accordingly. Most of the procedures are performed under local anesthesia or sedation, however, larger lesions may necessitate treatment in an operating room within a hospital setting under general anesthesia.
